Finish Application and Design
HomeThe finishes used on Frame Hardwoods, Inc. flooring products are ultra-violet cured urethanes. They are applied by a series of soft rollers with each layer being cured before the next layer is applied. Curing takes place in approximately 5-7 seconds per layer. The finish line is a continuous conveyor line approximately 300’ long and is contained in a climate controlled environment as well as a “dust-free” facility. Our finishes emit no VOC’s or harmful odors. The finishes are composed of urethane compounds that are cured using ultra violet light as a curing agent. UV cured coatings do not use a solvent for curing. Our facility in Chelsea, Michigan is VOC free.
There are 8 layers of finish applied to Chelsea Plank Flooring®. Each layer is formulated to perform a specific function within the finish system. The 2 initial layers perform as “tie coats” to assure that the finish will not pull away or “delaminate” if the flooring is struck, dented or scratched. Our tie coat adhesive system is also tested to resist delamination due to exposure to varying humidity conditions. Other layers are designed to act as abrasion resistant and scratch resistant layers. After all of these layers of finish are applied and cured, they are locked together with intense Ultra-violet light to form a solid sheet.
The finish on Chelsea Plank Flooring® is a registered name called TITANIUM TUFF® SSR FLEX. TITANIUM TUFF® SSR FLEX is an incredibly durable finish and represents the finish industry’s finest product. SSR was developed exclusively for use onChelsea Plank Flooring® and is not able to be used by any other manufacturer. The manufacturer of our finishes inspects our facility, finish line, and daily quality control data reports on a continual basis to insure that all products and finishes are properly applied and cured. The gloss level of TITANIUM TUFF® SSR FLEX is 35%.
The finish provided on Restoration Series Plank™ differs from TITANIUM TUFF® SSR finish. Restoration Series Plank™ Floors are designed to be installed and to appear similar in color and general appearance as floors manufactured and used during the late 1700’s – early 1900’s. Several of the floors are authentic reproductions created to match existing floors for additions or restorations to historic structures. RESTORATION SERIES PLANK finish is an ultra violet cured multiple layered urethane product that is designed to penetrate into the wood surface and to cure with the appearance and “feel” of Tung oil or a "wax" finish. It is a specially formulated urethane and does not use any oil, wax, or paraffin in the finish. The maintenance is the same as any urethane floor. The product is completely free of VOC’s. The sheen level is between 7% - 12%. The texture of the wood is left “open” and the appearance is incredibly authentic Restoration Series Plank™. Restoration Series Plank™ will provide excellent wear and surface protection superior to any site applied urethane finish. The manufacturing process and finishing process for Restoration Series Plank is protected by a US Patent Registration Number.
